HAINES CITY - A company out of South Carolina that makes prestressed concrete will be bringing 100 high-tech jobs to Haines City during the next three years.
Economic development leaders and city officials announced Tuesday that Metromont Corp. will be building a facility on Bannon Island Road, near Haines City's industrial park.
Rick Pennell, president and CEO of Metromont, said he was excited about the company building its fifth manufacturing plant.
"We've been working on this for three years in- house," Pennell said. "This is a great time to take advantage of the market. We are very excited about being here."
The company, whose product is used in parking garages, schools and stadiums, has facilities in Greenville, S.C.; Hiram, Ga.; LaVergne, Tenn.; and Charlotte, N.C.
Pennell said the company will start with about 30 employees and eventually add 70 more people for a total of 100 people during the next three years. He said the average salary is about $30,000 to $35,000. He said management employees would make more.
He said the company plans to hire people from the area.
"We may bring a couple of managers with us, but we will do most of the hiring from the area," Pennell said.
He said the company will be looking for skilled carpenters, welders and concrete finishers.
Gov. Charlie Crist also added his congratulations on the company locating in Haines City.
In a press release from Crist's office Tuesday afternoon, he commented on the jobs the company will bring to the area.
"The expansion of Metromont Corp. is a success story for the company, for the community and for Florida's economy. I congratulate Metromont on recognizing the strength of Haines City's workforce and infrastructure and I commend Haines City for their commitment to providing the necessary resources,'' Crist said. "Metromont is precisely the type of high-technology, quality manufacturing operation that we're so proud to welcome to the Sunshine State."
The city applied for several grants to help offset infrastructure costs as an enticement to the company locating here.
Haines City applied for a $750,000 Community Development Block Grant and a $500,000 state transportation and economic development grant to help pay for road improvements and utility placement for the company.
Assistant Haines City City Manager Ken Sauer said many organizations worked together to entice Metromont to come to Haines City.
Pennell said the company will start construction at the end of summer and will initially build a 50,000 square-foot building that eventually will be 125,000 square feet.
The company will make the condensed concrete inside the plant and then store the product on part of the 83-acre site.
Pennell said he expects the building to be completed sometime in spring 2008.
He said the company plans to use a lot of its own product on the building and said the company is making a $5 million to $7 million investment in Haines City.
Local economic development leaders all applauded the arrival of the company and both Ann Toney-Deal, Haines City's city manager, and County Manager Mike Herr outlined projects they have on the books that could use some of Metromont's product.
Toney-Deal mentioned the proposed banquet facility for Lake Eva Park and Herr mentioned a county jail expansion and new sheriff's office buildings.
