How in the world does someone without a family make it?" January Dennison asks. It was a question that led Dennison, who runs a technology company in Haines City, FL, to start the TRC Foundation and the reason why she is a winner of the Powerful Difference Award.
Each year the foundation distributes $100,000 to community agencies, such as the Sunshine Foundation, which runs a "Dream Village" for critically ill children, and the Haines City Women and Youth center, which helps abused and homeless women re-establish themselves and their families. And Dennison doesn't just hand out grants - she devotes hours to the center, working one-on-one with children, women and college students who receive scholarships from the foundation.
"Every month at the center, we ask, "What have we done for the community this month?" she says. "This foundation has enabled us to make a difference."
