Aerospace & Aviation Skyrocket in Polk County

May 27, 2026 News

Each year, Aviation Month, highlighted in May, recognizes the vital role aviation plays in connecting communities, supporting commerce, and creating high-quality careers across the country. In Polk County, Florida, the industry continues to gain altitude as new investments, emerging technologies, and strategic infrastructure position the region as a rising force in aviation, aerospace, and defense.

Polk County: Center of the Aviation Super State

Polk County is settled in the heart of Florida, providing direct access to some of the state’s most important transportation and aerospace assets. The region’s connectivity and existing infrastructure offer significant advantages for aviation and aerospace operations looking to expand and scale throughout the Southeast.

Polk County’s strategic advantages include:

  • 3 regional airports within the county
  • 5 international airports within 75 miles
  • Access to 2 Florida spaceports
  • Access to 100+ FAA-certified pilot schools statewide
  • Strong multimodal infrastructure supporting cargo, logistics, and aerospace growth

Polk’s unrivaled connectivity supports the movement of products, people and technology quickly throughout the Southeast.

Strong Talent Pipeline

Training programs, technical education partnerships, and access to flight academies help create pathways for future pilots, mechanics, engineers, logistics professionals, and aerospace technicians. This growing talent pipeline supports both existing employers and companies considering expansion into the region.

Polk offers several unique and successful programs geared specifically to training an equipped aviation and aerospace workforce. One shining example is the state-of-the-art training simulators recently installed at Bartow Executive Airport. This investment is part of a new ATC program available through Traviss Technical College, designed to address a critical staffing shortage of air traffic controllers. Polk County is one of the few school systems in the nation to provide this level of ATC training, which certifies students as air traffic controllers in just 10 months.
